This is a brief version of the comprehensive indexed manual that comes with Spellswell Plus. Online help is also available under the Spellswell Plus Help Menu, which is the yellow question mark in the upper right corner of your screen when Spellswell Plus is running.
To Use Spellswell Plus with Microsoft Internet Mail and News:
• Place the "Check Internet Mail and News" item in your Apple Menu Items folder, which is located in your System Folder. The command "Check Internet Mail and News" will appear in your Apple menu. Using Spellswell Plus with Internet Mail and News is as easy as checking spelling directly from one of Internet Mail and News’ menus.
• When Internet Mail and News is running and you have a message ready to spellcheck, choose "Spellcheck Internet Mail and News" from the Apple menu. (Spellswell Plus does not have to be running at the time.) Spellswell Plus "fetches" the text from your frontmost Internet Mail and News message window and quickly checks for errors and typos. Then it presents misspelled or questionable words alongside suggestions in its easy-to-use interface. Just click to choose a suggestion or type your correction and Spellswell Plus puts the corrected text back into your Internet Mail and News message window.
• Alternative method – When Internet Mail and News is running and you have a message ready to spellcheck, run Spellswell Plus and choose "Check Internet Mail and News" from Spellswell Plus' File menu.
To Use Spellswell Plus with Eudora Light:
• Place the "Spellcheck Eudora" script in your Apple Menu Items folder, which is located in your System Folder. The command "Spellcheck Eudora" will appear in your Apple menu. Using Spellswell Plus with Eudora Light is as easy as checking spelling directly from one of Eudora's menus.
• When Eudora Light is running and you have a message ready to spellcheck, choose "Spellcheck Eudora" from the Apple menu. (Spellswell Plus does not have to be running at the time.) Spellswell Plus "fetches" the text from your frontmost Eudora message window and quickly checks for errors and typos. Then it presents misspelled or questionable words alongside suggestions in its easy-to-use interface. Just click to choose a suggestion or type your correction and Spellswell Plus puts the corrected text back into your Eudora message window.
• Alternate method – When Eudora is running and you have a message ready to spellcheck, choose "Check Eudora" from Spellswell Plus' File menu.
To Use Spellswell Plus with Netscape Navigator:
• Place the "Spellcheck Netscape Navigator" item into your Apple Menu Items folder, which is located in your System Folder. The command "Spellcheck Netscape Navigator" will appear in your Apple menu. Using Spellswell Plus with Netscape Navigator is as easy as checking spelling directly from one of Netscape Navigator's menus.
• When Netscape Navigator is running and you have a message ready to spellcheck, choose "Spellcheck Netscape Navigator" from the Apple menu. (Spellswell Plus does not have to be running at the time.) Spellswell Plus "fetches" the text from your frontmost Netscape Navigator message window and quickly checks for errors and typos. Then it presents misspelled or questionable words alongside suggestions in its easy-to-use interface. Just click to choose a suggestion or type your correction and Spellswell Plus puts the corrected text back into your Netscape Navigator message window.
• Alternative method – When Netscape Navigator is running and you have a message ready to spellcheck, run Spellswell Plus and choose "Check Netscape Navigator" from Spellswell Plus' File menu.
To Use Spellswell Plus with America Online 3.0:
• Place the "Spellcheck AOL 3" item into your Apple Menu Items folder, which is located in your System Folder. The command "Spellcheck AOL 3" will appear in your Apple menu. Using Spellswell Plus with AOL 3 is as easy as checking spelling directly from one of AOL 3's menus.
• When AOL 3 is running and you have a message ready to spellcheck, choose "Spellcheck AOL 3" from the Apple menu. (Spellswell Plus does not have to be running at the time.) Spellswell Plus "fetches" the text from your frontmost AOL 3 message window and quickly checks for errors and typos. Then it presents misspelled or questionable words alongside suggestions in its easy-to-use interface. Just click to choose a suggestion or type your correction and Spellswell Plus puts the corrected text back into your AOL 3 message window.
• Alternative method – When AOL 3 is running and you have a message ready to spellcheck, run Spellswell Plus and choose "Check AOL 3" from Spellswell Plus' File menu.
What Spellswell Plus Does
Spellswell Plus proofreads documents for spelling mistakes and typographical errors.
Spellswell Plus “looks up” each word of your document in a Spellswell dictionary. If Spellswell Plus encounters a word that does not appear in the dictionary, Spellswell Plus displays the paragraph containing the unrecognized word with that unrecognized word highlighted.
Spellswell Plus gives you several ways of dealing with a questioned word:
• Replacing a questioned word with a dictionary entry that is alphabetically nearest to the unrecognized word
• Typing the correct replacement word
• Having Spellswell Plus suggest a possible replacement word
• Skipping a questioned word you do not want to change
• Adding a questioned word to the Spellswell dictionary if you are certain the word is correct
If an unrecognized word appears in a document several times, Spellswell Plus gives you the option of automatically replacing or skipping subsequent occurrences of the word in that particular document.
Types of Errors Spellswell Plus Detects
In addition to simple spelling errors, Spellswell Plus alerts you to typographical errors with punctuation and spacing.
Below, we have listed common typing and spelling errors that Spellswell Plus catches. Most of these checks are optional. Spellswell Plus is flexible. You can customize it to suit your personal needs.
• Spellswell Plus detects proper nouns that are not capitalized.
• Spellswell Plus spots uncapitalized words at the beginning of sentences.
• Spellswell Plus questions incorrectly hyphenated words such as “back-up”.
• Spellswell Plus catches missing apostrophes in words like “dont”.
• Spellswell Plus notices missing spaces between sentences and words.
• Spellswell Plus finds spaces before punctuation marks.
• Spellswell Plus uncovers extra spaces between words.
• Spellswell Plus flags incorrect abbreviations, like “Ph.d.”
• Spellswell Plus observes double word errors, like “the the”.
• Spellswell Plus examines usage of “a” and “an” before consonants and/or vowels.
Spellswell Plus Dictionaries
A 93,000+ word dictionary is included with Spellswell Plus. This dictionary contains common English words and abbreviations. If you have more specialized spelling needs, contact Working Software, Inc. We publish a variety of Add-On spelling dictionaries, including an Expanded Dictionary with over 103,000 English words--10,000 more plural and plural possessive forms than the “Dictionary-93,000+”. We also publish Medical, Legal, Science, Business, and Geographical dictionaries.
• You can customize your Spellswell Plus dictionaries by adding words to or removing words from them. You can add as many words as your disk space allows.
• You can change dictionaries using the Dictionary menu.
Spellswell Plus’ dictionaries are “spelling dictionaries” not “definition dictionaries”.
• When you run Spellswell Plus it first tries to open the dictionary it used the last time it ran, if there was a last time. If it can’t find a dictionary this way it then looks in the same folder as the Spellswell Plus application and opens a dictionary located there. If these two methods don’t work it asks you to locate a dictionary.
Note- Once you open a Spellswell dictionary, Spellswell Plus remembers the dictionary’s location. You need not locate this dictionary again unless you do any of the following:
• Change the name of the dictionary
• Change the name of the folder containing the dictionary
• Change the name of the disk containing the dictionary
• Move the dictionary to a new folder or a new disk
• Delete the dictionary
If you move or rename your dictionary, Spellswell Plus looks for a dictionary in its folder and failing to locate one re-prompts you to “Please locate and open a dictionary.”
The Dictionary Menu
• Spellswell Plus builds a Dictionary menu containing the names of the dictionaries in the folder as Spellswell Plus. It also adds the name of the dictionary it is currently using, if that dictionary is from a different folder. You can change dictionaries when you are not currently checking a document by choosing the new dictionary from this menu, or choosing other dictionary from the menu and locating a dictionary to open.
Switching dictionaries- In the future if you decide to use a different dictionary such as an Add-On Dictionary, look in the Dictionary menu. This menu lists all the dictionaries in Spellswell’s folder. If there are none listed or you wish to choose one from a different location choose Other from this menu. Spellswell Plus then tells you “Please locate and open a dictionary”, and you can open the other dictionary.
The Spellswell Plus Dialog
Spellswell Plus questions words that do not appear in its dictionary. Spellswell Plus highlights questioned words and lets you see the words in context. If you are checking a “Word Services” application, you might need to drag the Spellswell Plus dialog and/or the text editing window around the screen until you can view both the Spellswell Plus dialog and the text editing window. (Click the title bars of the windows to drag them.)
Through the Preferences dialog, you can set Spellswell Plus to suggest replacement words automatically.
Spellswell Plus displays the questioned word in the “Unknown” box. In the “Replace with” box, Spellswell Plus displays a list of correction suggestions or dictionary entries alphabetically closest to the “Unknown” word. This might be the word you want to use as a replacement. To choose a different replacement, scroll through the dictionary by clicking on the “up”, “down”, “right”, or “left” arrows, or click the Alphabetic or Correction Suggestions radio buttons.
The Alphabetic and Correction Suggestions Viewing Area
The “Dictionary” list of words in the center of the Spellswell Plus dialog is the Dictionary window. This window displays either the alphabetic spelling dictionary or a list of correction suggestions (guesses) for the questioned word.
If you want to view the dictionary, but Spellswell Plus is displaying correction suggestions, press the Alphabetic radio button. If you want to view guesses, but Spellswell Plus is displaying the dictionary, press the Correction Suggestions radio button.
Making a “Wildcard” Guess
Spellswell Plus can make a “wildcard” guess. If you type “comm?er” in the “Replace with” box and press the Correction Suggestions button, Spellswell Plus lists all the words that begin with the letters “comm” and end with the letters “er”. Be as specific as possible with a wildcard guess. A guess using “t?” can take a very long time.
Press command-period ( -.) to stop a guess in progress.
